The Boy Who Cried Wolf - Timely parenting help
5:21 PM | Author: Seen.By.Ice.Queen
I am a first time parent. And I believe as is the case with most first time parents, much of what I put into my parenting manual is either from advice given by well-intending people or by gut feel. Being the stubborn and opinionated person that I am, it is often the latter.

One of my major challenges recently has been getting my four-year old to NOT LIE. I started by trying to reason. And when that failed to work, I resorted to... lying.. I've thus far told him that if he lied, his teeth would all come off.. I don't think he cares much about his teeth though.. since this tactic doesn't seem to be working. o_O'"

Yes, yes.. I know I'm not setting a good example. But honestly, when you are a FT working mum like me, getting things done efficiently is of optimum importance. That, is not to say that what I am doing is right. But honestly, I am at my wits end.

This is why I am utterly grateful to SRT's timely (well, at least in my opinion and to me, that means EVERYTHING) release of a play about THE BOY WHO CRIED WOLF. Most of us would know the moral of the story. So to this play, I am going for sure. I'll probably try to buy a storybook on PINOCCHIO as well in the meantime..

Singapore Repertory Theatre’s The Little Company
proudly presents

Written by Jean Tay based on the fairy tale by Aesop
Directed by Tracie Pang

Little Petey is bored, bored, bored. It is really not much fun to sit on a little rock, on a little hill, watching a little flock of sheep all day long. So little Petey decides to hatch the perfect plan to have some fun and scare the socks off his fellow villagers. But little does poor Petey know that a very tiny lie can lead to a whole lot of trouble...

The Boy Who Cried Wolf is a wonderful new production from The Little Company. Based on the classic fairy tale by Aesop, you will be delighted by how it is brought to life by an exciting script and a professional cast of adult actors.

This play is a heart-warming illustration of why it’s important to tell the truth, and how one lie can make a world of difference.
Dramatised by award-winning playwright Jean Tay who is best known for her plays Everything But The Brain (ST Life! Theatre Awards winner for Best Original Script 2006) and Boom.

Directed by Tracie Pang (ST Life! Theatre Award nominee for Best Director in 2007 and 2008) who has directed numerous productions for The Little Company.

This comic twist to a classic tale brings home a familiar lesson in a fun and accessible way.
Recommended for 2 – 6 year-olds

Be FAB don't FAG
4:42 PM | Author: Seen.By.Ice.Queen

Here's something a little out of the ordinary for you folks. Health Promotion Board (HPB) tied up with Fashion Creative Director, Marie Ng to bring 2 fashion events to you (by the time you read this, one will be over but you can still trot to the next one).

What's Chill?
All hosts and models in this show are subscribing to the You don't have to smoke to be cool mantra. A real breath of fresh air considering the fashion industry has always depicted cigarette chomping cigarette thin models (not that being cigarette thin has anything to do with cigarette chomping) so having these glamour puss tell you how to look FAB without that FAG is one sure way to tell you they mean business.

The Thrill
There's this signature piece at the event to look out for. Inspired by event host/HPB ambassador for anti-smoking, Evelyn Maria Ng and designed by Kahlee, this dress is half white and half black. The half white is the depiction of clean, wholesome, health of a non-smoker wheras the other black half portrays dark, gloomy, dirty and unhealthy image of a smoker.

If you missed the last show held at Heeren on 2 May, make your way down to the next one on 23 May 2009, 6pm at Tampines Mall. Last I heard, they're giving out goodie bags with FAB vouchers too!

Just promise to LIVE IT UP WITHOUT LIGHTING UP ;)

As a general guideline, I don't blog about personal stuff on this blog. I also try not to blog about depressing issues unless it is for a cause. I mean, seriously, who needs more gloom amidst the doom we're facing with the Swine Flu and Financial Crisis right?

However, this poem I received in my personal mailbox touched me in a very personal way. For all you cynics out there, it is irrelevant whether this is real or not. The key is in the message here.

To make you see where I'm coming from, I'll let you know that amidst the glitz and glamour that revolves around my daily work life, I am facing a very painful situation back at home. My grandmother had a bad fall 2 months ago and has been bedbound and deteriorating day by day while my mother was diagnosed with Lung Cancer some time back. These 2 people who are extremely dear to me have been fighting every single day of their lives eversince, just to keep themselves alive.. something that most of us have been taking for granted every breath we take..

So maybe, it is time to do a stockcheck on your lives and engage in a Slow Dance

This is a poem written by a teenager with cancer,
a terminally ill young girl in a New York Hospital ...

SLOW DANCE
Have you ever watched kids
On a merry-go-round?

Or listened to the rain

Slapping on the ground?

Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight?

Or gazed at the sun into the fading night?

You better slow down.

Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.

The music won't last.

Do you run through each day

On the fly?

When you ask How are you?

Do you hear the reply?

When the day is done

Do you lie in your bed

With the next hundred chores

Running through your head?
You'd better slow down

Don't dance so fast.

Time is short..
The music won't last.

Ever told your child,

We'll do it tomorrow?

And in your haste,

Not see his sorrow?

Ever lost touch,

Let a good friendship die
Cause you never had time

To call and say,'Hi'

You'd better slow down.

Don't dance so fast.

Time is short.
The music won't last.
When you run so fast
to get somewhere

You miss half the fun
of getting there.

When you worry
and hurry through your day,

It is like an unopened gift.....

Thrown away.

Life is not a race.
Do take it slower

Hear the music

Before the song is over.

This young girl had 6 months left to live,
and as her dying wish, she wanted to send a letter telling everyone to
live their life to the fullest, since she never will.

She'll never make it to prom, graduate from high school,
or get married and have a family of her own.
